When I sing along with the worship songs in church, I consider the meaning of every word I’m singing. I don’t want to just say stuff because it is in the song. I want to understand what I am saying, and I want to mean what I am saying.
So, what does this song mean when it says, “Our God is an awesome God?”
I looked up “awesome” in the dictionary, and it was defined as “inspiring awe.”
Wow. Not helpful. I think I could have come up with that on my own without expending the effort to look it up. So now I need to look up “awe.”
Awe is defined as, “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime.” And veneration is defined as, “respect or awe inspired by the dignity, wisdom, dedication, or talent of a person.”
So, to say that God is an awesome God is to say that God inspires an emotion that combines holy fear, respect for His wisdom, and a wonder of His authority.
Our God does inspire awe, but how often do people take the time to recognize it?
Throughout the pages of the Bible, we see the awesome things that God has done. But there is a tendency to allow some things to become common and ordinary. I think that’s why Rich says, “I hope that you have not too quickly forgotten.” Nothing about God is common or ordinary. Our God is an awesome God!
It’s not just reading the Bible and seeing an awesome God in the pages of the Bible but seeing the living God in your life and recognizing that He is awesome. He deserves your awe.
