He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. (Ps. 33:5 NASB)
God is good. I probably hear this statement, or see it written, several times a week. There are so many reasons to say it. It is an expression that cannot be overused. In fact, I doubt it is used enough.
Matthew West says it this way:
How good
How good
How good of God
My heart can’t help but sing
How good
How good
How good of God
To be so good to me
As proof of the goodness of God, he says, “My sins have been forgiven” and “They’ll (arms of God) carry me to Heaven when it’s time to leave this earth”. He comes to the conclusion, “Lord ain’t it just like You to give me more than I deserve”.
That’s what I want to focus on, that the Lord gives me more than I deserve. Not just me, but all of us.
You can pick out a number of Biblical accounts of the Lord giving more than anyone deserves. However, I think the most prominent one is where Christ saved us from our sins.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phi. 2:5-8 ESV)
How good of God to be so good to me!
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mk. 10:45 ESV)
How good of God to be so good to me!
But the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man death came, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. (1 Cor. 15:20-22 NASB)
How good of God to be so good to me!
Christ said that the purpose of His earthly life in the flesh was so that He could purchase our redemption (See Mk. 10:45 above). This scripture uses the word “ransom”. The Biblical definition of ransom is, “a price paid to secure the freedom of a slave or to set free from liabilities and charges, and generally the deliverance from calamity by paying the price.”
From the moment that man fell, God’s plan has been that of redemption. That is, sin had bound man in the chains of bondage. The punishment was death – eternal separation from God.
For the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23a HCSB)
To be free from this punishment, a blood sacrifice had to be made. That’s what the Mark scripture tells us. “to give his life as a ransom for many.” That’s why Romans goes on to say:
but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 6:23b HCSB)
Put it together, and the verse reads:
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 6:23 HCSB)
Jesus paid the price (ransom) to give us freedom from sin (salvation)!

How Good of God
If someone would’ve told me
How good my life would get
I would have called them crazy
‘Cause I couldn’t see it yet
From a story going nowhere
To where I’m standing now
I’m smiling ‘cause I know
There’s only one way how
How good
How good
How good of God
My heart can’t help but sing
How good
How good
How good of God
To be so good to me
My sins have been forgiven
And my wrongs have been erased
And I’ve learned what’s so amazing
About amazing grace
Yeah this life I live is proof
That every prayer I prayed was heard
Lord ain’t it just like You
To give me more than I deserve
How good
How good
How good of God
My heart can’t help but sing
How good
How good
How good of God
To be so good to me
From the victories on the mountain
To the heartbreak valley low
I’ve always been surrounded
By the arms that won’t let go
They’ll carry me to Heaven
When it’s time to leave this earth
Lord ain’t it just like You
To give me more than I deserve
How good
How good
How good of God
My heart can’t help but sing
How good
How good
How good of God
To be so good to me
How good
How good
How good of God
To be so good to me
