Being Like Jesus

There is a musician named Pat Terry who has a song called “If  Jesus Was Like Me.”  That is really a twist on the thinking of being “like Christ.”

If we are to be like Jesus, then the way we act, talk, and even think is going to be different.  We have to really stop and think, “If Jesus were standing, or sitting, right here with me, would I be doing the things I am doing?”  I understand that Jesus is right here with us, but I mean in a physical, tangible, visible way.  If we could actually see Jesus walking with us, doing everything that we do, would we take Him to clubs, parties, movies, etc.?  Would we talk the way that we do?  I don’t just mean filthy language, I mean gossiping, slander, making fun of people, talking behind peoples backs, etc.  We don’t have Jesus in a visible form, so we have to rely on prayer (both talking to Jesus, and listening to Jesus) and Bible reading for direction.  I know that it sounds a little cliché, but we need to ask ourselves “What would Jesus do?” in every situation.

Now, the other side of the coin.  If we are to be like Christ, the proof is to see if He could be like us.  Take your thoughts, your attitudes, your actions, and place them on Jesus 2000 years ago.  What would that look like?

–          Would you be proud of your miracles and brag about the accomplishments?

–          Would you be accepting of everyone no matter what class they were from?

–          Would you be willing to hand out forgiveness so easily, even to those who personally wronged you?

There are many more examples, but I think you get the point.

We need to strive to be like Jesus in everything we say and do, but if the world looked to any one of us to be the Messiah, it would fall short by a long shot.
