Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (ESV)”
Lately, I have really been paying attention to this scripture. There have been several songs written from here that I am familiar with singing, but what does it really mean? On the surface, it seems pretty clear, but I wanted to understand it the way it would have been understood 2000 years ago (give or take a year or 2).
I did a word study on the original Greek, and came up with my own version of this text:
Make your number one priority pursuing the power and authority of Christ in your life and the righteous living He requires. After that, everything else will fall in line.
It seems to me that the Kingdom of God, or the Power and Authority of Christ in our lives, is not always the top priority. For me, it is so easy to get caught up in the things that are present and visible. However, the Kingdom of God is present, just not visible. That is why the scripture says that we must seek, or pursue His kingdom and His righteousness.
