On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
The words to the Hymn Solid Rock come from an illustration given by Jesus:
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. (Matt. 7:24-27 ESV)
Jesus is not comparing 2 houses against each other. He is comparing the foundations on which they were built. He says that if the foundation is solid, the house will be able to withstand the storms that come. The house He is referring to is your life, and the rock is Jesus.
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 3:11 NIV)
To build your life on Jesus means that every aspect of your life is based on Jesus. It is where your identity comes from.
If your foundation is not Jesus (rock) then it has to be sand (anything else). A few examples of a sandy foundation:
-
-
- Job
- Relationships
- Yourself
- How others view you
-
These are the wrong places to develop your identity.
Jesus tells us that the difference between the two foundations is seen when a storm hits. Whether your foundation is in Jesus or something else, you will face some storms in life. Jesus talks about rain, floods and wind that “beat on the house”. That doesn’t sound promising – that the storms of life are going to beat on you! However, when the storm passes, and it always does, your condition will reflect the foundation you built your life on.
If your life is built on the sand, then the storms will leave you devastated. However, if you build your life on the rock of Jesus, then you are left intact, standing strong.
Scripture tells us that Jesus is not merely any rock, but He is the cornerstone.
For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says,
‘The stone that you builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.’ (Acts 4:11 NLT)
A cornerstone is a large, sturdy stone that supports 2 walls set at a right angle to each other. The cornerstone is the key piece that gives a foundation its strength.

Cornerstone
Lookin’ out my window, feelin’ the crescendo
Sunset on a quiet sea
Sittin’ with the ones that I’ll forever love
We’re waitin’ on a flash of green
And even when the nights got cold
You have always held me close
You’re the only Rock that I could ever stand on
You’re the only one for me
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin’ ‘round
I’m here travelin’ down this long and winding road
Seasons come and seasons go
They take me high, then leave me low
But I’m still standin’ on the only Rock I know
You’re my cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go
My cornerstone
Bible by my bedside, sweatin’ through a long night
Wrestlin’ the hounds of shame
Tryna turn the hands back on a troublin’ past
Every move I make’s in vain
But even in the shiftin’ winds
You are Who You’ve always been
You’re the only Rock that I could ever stand on
Through it all, You remain
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin’ ‘round
I’m here travelin’ down this long and winding road
Seasons come and seasons go
They take me high, then leave me low
But I’m still standin’ on the only Rock I know
You’re my cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go
My cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I’m standin’
All other ground is sinking sand
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I’m standin’
All other ground is sinking sand
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I’m standin’
Yes, Lord
You’re the only One that I will build my life on
Through it all, You remain
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin’ around
And I’m here travelin’ down this long and winding road
Seasons come and seasons go
I been high, and I been low
But I’m standin’ on the only Rock I know
You’re my cornerstone
No matter where I go
My cornerstone
No matter where I go
The sun goes up and the sun comes down
And I build my life on this solid ground
Oh, yeah
You are the only Rock I stand on
